Azalea Festival and Madison County Fair *
We have booths at both of these local events. We will have plants, handcrafted birdhouses, butterfly houses, and bat houses for sale. We also welcome your questions so please stop by and say hi!
Fredericktown Food Bank *
Our members bring non perishables to our meetings and the president takes it all to the food bank.
The Annual Plant Sale *
The end of April (weather permitting) we have our plant sale. We have perennials, annuals, herbs, flowers, and vegetables. We also have knock out roses. Watch April Democrat Newspaper for sale time and date.
Christmas Wreath and Centerpiece contest *
This contest was started last year with awesome results. We had some great entries in both categories. This year we plan to add a kid’s level too. The winners are displayed at the Civil War Museum during the month of December.
The Community Gardens **
We maintain the community garden and gazebo. Our members have adopted beds in the garden too. We hope to get educational gardens in place next year. The storm that hit our town in May has put all of these years’ plans on hold. We also have beds at the flagpole by city hall, the Civil War Museum, and others around town for our community to enjoy.

Winter Garden Blues
Nothing is worse to a gardener than winter. The weather prevents you from being out in the garden and this is when those seed magazines fill the mailbox. They tempt us with those great pictures and new plants. I suffer spring fever bad this time of year but I do know a cure; planning the garden for this year.
Take advantage of the down time to carefully plan your garden. I highly recommend a garden journal not just to remember what is growing where, but to see how it did where I planted it. This is where planning helps. Plants need different soil, sun, water and fertilizer. Some plants benefit each other and some plants attract good critters. Some plants look good with other plants and some plants don’t like each other. Take this time to research and plan. Look back at last years hits and misses in your garden.
Tired of that time consuming mowing each week or two? Plan a few island beds around the yard. It cuts down on mowing and a lot of plants like full sun. I have a large yard and would rather sit on my porch than mow. I have native wildflower beds, cacti beds and lots of ornamental grasses in different locations. I kept track last year and lost 1-1/2 hours of mow time. Yeah!
Our club will be happy to help you with any questions you have. Please stop by our plant sale this spring to pick up some great plants for your garden projects. All profits from this sale stay in our community! So kick those winter blues with some spring ideas.

Winter Kitchen Gardening
by
Barbara Simonson, The Garden Forum
Bring a little bit of the tropics to your house this winter and grow an avocado or citrus tree. It’s easy and kids love this project.
Avocado;
Dry the avocado seed for a few days then peel of papery brown skin. Plant seed 2/3rds of the way into the soil leaving the tip exposed. Give it 3-5 hours of sun and water well. Soon sprouts will begin to appear. Be sure to pinch back as it grows to keep it from getting long and leggy.
Citrus;
Save the largest seeds from oranges and lemons. Plant several in a small pot, water well and cover with clear plastic, keep warm. No sun until seeds germinates in 2-3 weeks. When seedlings have at least 4 leaves put into their own little pots. Then give 4-5 hours of sunlight a day and water about 3 times a week. The citrus tree has great flowers and fragrance. Enjoy!
